We decided to go to Ghent today instead of Bruges (definitely not because we ignored the 8 o'clock alarm).. This was our first trip using the interrail passes, and no one even checked them! Typical. We arrived at the main train station and thought the city centre would be very close. How we were wrong! We hadn't eaten and it was scorching hot in the sun but spirits remained high. We walked about 3 miles in every direction until we gave up and checked my phone. We started going towards a busier area and thought we were on the right track. Then we came across a waffle restaurant and decided to stop for a rest and to cool down. I had a waffle with fresh strawberries and Paul had cherries.
Then we made our way to Gravensteen, an 11th century castle in the centre of Ghent. It was really interesting and there was a great view of the city (after climbing about 500 spiral steps). Ghent was really picturesque and there were lots of churches and canals.
On the train back there was a group of Spanish women in front of us, and one Belgian boy was sitting there too. He started speaking basic Spanish to them (I obviously was listening in) and they were from Barcelona. There were some occasions where he would say a word in English and I'd shout it in Spanish. Then he would refer to me for help
