Today started at an US airport, which yet again reminded us of the futility of war. We then travelled on through fabulous countryside continuing along the Ho Chi Minh trail. At one point we stopped at another site of an airfield which was the site they kept most of their stock of agent orange. Started with breakfast in the town nearest to the Phong Nha National Park - where we went yesterday to see the cave. We then joined the Ho Chi Minh Trail or at least the one that connected the east Ho Chi Minh Trail with the west. It was built during the war to allow the north to get soldiers and supplies to the south. It is now a road linking 2 towns 260km apart and 4 remote villages. We started the day at a war cemetery- as usual the average age of those buried there was 19 or 20. It was a lovely, peaceful, beautiful setting and we came away feeling what a waste of human life. We then went on a magical mystery tour that took to a rubber plantation, a riverside with loads of fishing boats and nets suspended above the water, ending in some of the most dramatic scenery imaginable. We started the day at King whatever’s tomb - died in 192... and spent the 9 years he was in power designing his tomb. Actually it was good but no where near as good as the rest of the day. We then got lost going up the coast and went the wrong side of the Shrimp farms - it was brilliant. The reflections were out of this world. We then went through a rural area that really liked worshipping their ancestors. We went past monument after monument, each one for one...
