Really Almost There
It is fair to state that I was quite dubious about this hiking business. Not sure that I was that interested in spending all day in burning sun or driving rain to walk up hill for a view of a mountain, weather permitting anyway, to have to go down again without slipping over on the rocky paths.
However, after the success of our one-day hike in Akaroa, I was persuaded to give the three-day Tongariro Northern Circuit a go. After the first hour I was enjoying the sun, feeling quite chilled about it all, so suggested we take an hour and a half diversion up to see a lake. Pah. Nothing special to see and a slippy path back down. As we were approaching what would have been our end time without the diversion, my legs were feeling they'd had enough, my shoulders were a little sunburnt and my toes were done being in their boots, I realised the error of my earlier ways.
However all was saved as we found ourselves approaching this joy giving sign shortly afterwards as we had somehow made up the time. Yay!!!
