Higgo saw a leaflet in Lakes Entrance for this place called Phillip Island so we decided that would be our next stop. I even felt a bit better so shared some of the driving. Phillip Island wasn't too far away but for some reason it still took us hours!! We booked into our YHA called Amaroo in Cowes and strolled over to the information centre. At this point in the roadtrip it seems I spend most of my life in Information Centres. We booked ourselves in for this Penguin Parade thing at sunset and went back to the hostel to check into our cabin. They'd upgraded us for free yaaaay! There was a double bed and I pulled the sick card and got to sleep there woooo!!!
Went at sunset to the other side of the island where the Penguin Parade is held and managed to get a good spot right on the beach. Waited for about half an hour until it got really dark and then all the Little Penguins came in from the sea! They kind of congregate about 100metres offshore and make these hucking noises to each other. Then they will all waddle up to the waters edge and change their minds and run back into the sea! They did this about 3 of 4 times before finally deciding it was safe enough to waddle up the beach, right past us and into their nests inland to feed their chicks. There were about 7/8 groups of penguins and easily over 100 penguins in total. Very weird sight to be seeing in Australia. Only the Little Penguin species are in Australia.
