USA Travels
No activities today so lazy start and late breakfast. Ruth never thought having a lie in was getting up at 0800! Lazy walk into town and on for a massage each. Much gentler than the Thai variety, so much so I nearly fell asleep. We had been told by another party member of a bamboo bridge crossing a river feeding the Mekong. We went to find it. The guy who owns it takes it down each year when the river floods and rebuilds it after the rainy season. Health and safety eat your heart out. It was about 250 yards long, and made of BAMBOO. With a river running below it. You get the message, wobbly and a bit scary. Then followed a walk to The Paper Village, where after a beer I plucked up enough courage to buy Ruth some silver earrings. Back over the other side of the bridge we walked the beautiful streets of Luang Prabang. Go here Guys. This place is wonderful. IT'S THE FIRST ASIAN PLACE I'VE BEEN TO THAT ACTUALLY LOOKS BETTER DURING THE DAY. French colonial buildings, Bougainville, monks in orange robes raiding cash machines! And temples everywhere. It was at this point that I realised I had spent some money and got sudden cramps in my tummy. With a sphincter tighter than a space shuttle porthole and covered in sweat I rushed into the nearest Cafe where, leaving Ruth to order - you can tell how bad I was - I vanished to the utilities. A happy ending ensued and I can highly recommend Imodium Instants and 500mg of antibiotic. Problem solved. Joint sealed. Ever onward. Sunset over the Mekong had been recommended and so we walked back down to the river and found a bar and drank beer and read while the sun did its magic on the river. Back to the Lau Lau Garden Restaurant for a Buffalo burger and home! A brilliant day in a brilliant place.
