Jacky and I attempted to go snorkelling today because Beth and Owen had told us it was amazing and you can see loads of sharks and turtles and stuff! We had free snorkel hire from the hostel but had to pay for stinger suits which was a bit rubbish, but not too expensive! We caught the bus and trekked through the wilderness a bit to a place called Arthur Bay, which was a gorgeous, empty beach...we were a little bit worried we might find a crocodile on the way though haha! I tried snorkelling but was a bit too freaked out - the visibility was really bad which scared me, especially as there are loads of deadly jellyfish there and I didn't completely trust the stinger suit!! So I just sat on the beach for a bit while Jacky snorkelled, and then by around 12:30 we were dying of heat and trekked back to the bus stop...it was a major trek. So crazily hot, and we ran out of water fast, and it was all uphill - absolutely dying! Then we got to the bus stop and it was over an hour until the next bus, so we ended up just walking back to the hostel - scarily hot, it was not pleasant!
We chilled in the hostel pool for a while which was epic because it was so hot, then went to try and find rock wallabies to feed! They are meant to hang out at a place called arcadia but we couldn't find them which was a bit disappointing. We went to the beach there for a bit, then went to get a bus to Nelly Bay to go to the supermarket, but ended up walking there too....it was absolutely mad, scarily hot, and we ended up trekking through a bit of jungle haha...but it was pretty cool! We were loving the aircon when we got to the supermarket, bought some food and drinks for the evening and caught the bus back.
That night there was a "full moon party" on at the other hostel at magnetic (Base). It was basically what I had been told was a good reason for going to magnetic island so was quite looking forward to it! Hadn't even expected one because it wasn't a full moon, but they were doing it for Australia Day! Everyone in the room in our hostel was going which was really fun, they were all really nice and some of them had hairdryers and straighteners(!!!) which was a serious novelty...especially awesome as we had air con so could actually use them! We had a few drinks in the hostel then caught the bus back over past Nelly Bay to where Base is. It was a bit weird, people drinking from buckets again - but they were faily expensive, like $14! (We had already paid $20 just to get in!!). The music was pretty bad, so even though the people we were with were good craic, it wasn't the best night ever! It was alright though.
When I got back I was feeling a bit homesick because I seriously miss just having a proper good night out! Skyped Les for a bit which was cool...bit weird though when a kangaroo started running about around me in the pitch black bar area where I was sitting, so I had to make a swift exit and hit bed haha.
