Left Tupiza at 9.30 as Jenny had to go back to hospital.
Potosi founded in the 17th Century is at 3900 meters and one of the highest cities in the world. This town is the remains of a place that was once the home of the wealthiest people in the world. The silver mines, whilst depleted still operate today. Town has very small streets, truck got stuck down one of them. Accommodation is clean and near the town square. We arrived at 7pm unpacked and went to the square for dinner. Some had Llama steaks. We were also lucky enough to be here for Potosi's saint day. There was a street marching band and dancers all in traditional gear. They finished at the cathedral where there was a fireworks display.
9th March
City tour- went to miners market and met some of the locals. Bought coca leaves and drinks as gifts for miners. Went up to the silver mine which is over 4000 metred. What an eye opener, the conditions are terrible and the salary for class 3 miners is $12 a day. Widowed women work in the scrap heaps trying to make a living. Poverty everywhere. We then headed into the city centre visited the Cathedral which has been under restoration for six years. Absolutely beautiful inside. We climbed up the bell tower for views over Potosi. Pretty awesome. After lunch at the Koala cafe we we out to the hot springs lagoon which was 2800 meter deep in the middle with a temp of 30c degrees. On the way we went through Devils pass. The lagoon was picturesque with a colorful mountain backdrop. A relaxing afternoon. Resting up now, going to square for dinner.
