Zooming along the Rhine into Germany.
It is amazing how wide this river is and how much traffic is moving up and down the river. We have seen towns on the bank on either side but no information about which town. It is now 7am and the boat has been sailing since 9am yesterday.
An excursion to Maastricht in Netherlands was our choice today. A medieval town with the traditional buildings and narrow streets and an old city wall. Today being Sunday no shops are open and the streets are very empty which gives a a chance to explore without pushing through the crowds. St Servatius Basilica is on the square it has a massive pipe organ and we were lucky enough to hear part of an organ recital. Maastricht is the home town of Andre Rieu and all the tourist buses stop to take a photo of his house. An impressive building but how annoying having all those people walking past to take photos.
The afternoon excursion was into Cologne and we gave the tour a miss and explored on our own. The cathedral is the most popular tourist site and didn't disappoint. The stain glass windows are massive but no English translation for the information. Ended up in a bar for the obligatory beer(not me) and happened upon a brass band with an excellent singer. Joined in the singing with all the locals even Que,sera was a favourite. From what we could gather the crowd didn't want them to stop and called out for more at the end of each song. An enjoyable afternoon.
