There is something truly mythical about this dirt road that keeps drawing me back.
Is it that you can camp at over 2100 metres? Is that it’s the highest dirt road in Europe that attracts adventure riders and 4x4 enthusiasts alike from all over.
The Col du Somellier has around 25 km of sweet switchbacks starting at 2100 metres with views to … well you know what I mean.
All I know is it’s my third time and I like that very much. This was the first opportunity to visit again here since 2019, I left unfinished business as the road was closed due to a large rock fall. When one thinks of rocks we do not imagine rocks half the size of a house coming down the mountain. I was sad at not being able to ride but happy at not having to dodge rocks that size.
Today … 08.30 early start.
Fuelled, left the small unique camp site thankyou Google.
Some simply sublime road riding in the high alps on twistes.
Passed many infamous Tour de France climbs.

Bed early awoken by gay couple with free range dogs.
10 pm barking dogs 🐕 not exactly the wilderness camp site I imagined.
Several 4x4s, and 2wd (with dogs).
Earlier the marmots … remember them.
Ate well again … gnocchi a la ewen … washed down with two small beers.
Freezing wearing every stitch.
Will get up early again and beat the crowds taking my brekkie.
