The statues of the saints and kings are everywhere. The tops of buildings always has a statue of some form or a tile mosaic showing either Jesus or the Virgin Mary. Paintings and mosaics are everywhere as well as colorful plant pots on the balconies.
When we were leaving Toledo, our guide mentioned that the Tagus river runs through it and when we arrive in Lisbon, the Tagus roars through and on into the Atlantic.
Immediately upon leaving Toledo we were driving through the plains of La Mancha. Very dry, flat, and barren land. Can you say Saskatchewan? Apparently most of the farmers have left and now live nearer the larger cities in small villages. They live in dormitory style accommodations to make sure there's room for everyone. They get jobs as they can and live a hand to mouth existence.
All of a sudden there are orchards of almond and olive trees. The landscape becomes more mountainous and quite rocky.
