So we drove for an hour and arrived in the ancient city of Toledo. It started as a Roman city of approx 45,000 people, then after the "Big Fall" the Moors, Christians and the Jews took over. There are 11,000 people living within the old walled city today with narrow cobbled streets and a mixture of new stores and apts with the old walls and foundations. You can still see the Roman aqueducts, bridges and some ruins. One of the oldest synagogues is here in the Jewish quarter but apparently the community is no longer here.
The summer is so hot here that most of the Spanish people have gone to the seashore so we've all noticed a lot of shops are closed. Toledo is famous for it's swords and the method of steel making, but also for it's marzipan. Apparently the Nuns started making it to raise money for the Convent & the Church.
We visited a shop where they make these steel swords as well as knives, and intricate jewelery made in both the Spanish and Moorish design.
