At over 330km from Victor Harbor, and with the heat, Robe felt like a really long drive away... And there was fairly little to see other than desert and trees, and occasionally some green / mossy / smelly water, a few trees, and the odd signposts warning of possible kangaroos crossing, but saddly we didn't get to see any of our bouncy friends.
But we got to Robe late afternoon, just right to give us time to unwind and then search for food - which we then ate in our private garden under the gazeebo...
When I say private garden... we stayed in a placed called Robe House, which is full of history - it was apparently the first house to be constructed in Robe, in the 1800s, and housed the then 'government resident' as they call it. It does make you wonder why they would need one of those though if there were no other houses around!!!
The house was converted in to a B&B, and very well looked after and catered for with 3 rooms/ studios directly off the veranda overlooking the garden, and two other rooms accessible through the main door which we think are the two that have their own fireplace as well. The owners do not live on site but have their own house a short distance away. Robe House is definitely worth a stay! Shame it was only one night for us...
We also tried a very local wine, a sauvignon blanc from Mt Benton which is effectively the next small town, about 5 / 10km from Robe. The wine was really nice, and righfully carried the award of best wine of Australia for 2010!
On the road again late morning Friday...
