Adventures of a Global Wanderer
The final leg of my tour of Tongyeong took me to the Folk History Museum just behind the Jungang Live Fish Market (see previous entry). The museum had free admission and celebrates the historic maritime victory of Admiral Lee against the Japanese invasion 400 years ago
There were various portraits of Admiral Lee and artwork showing the Turtle Ships in battle against the Japanese.
As well there were commemorative coins, stamps, and other souvenir items to celebrate this local hero
Another section had traditional furniture, as well as metalwork, and detailed corner clay roof tiles
Towards the end were some traditional folk items such as masks and costumes worn during mask dance performances
Next to the museum was the Sebyeongwan Hall. Unfortunately the whole complex was closed and undergoing restoration work
A few blocks behind up a long hill was the final stop Chungnyeolsa Shrine. I wasnt going to go here at first as I was quite tired after a full day in Tongyeong but ended up here anyway trying to get a good shot of Sebyeongwan Hall which was closed for renovations
Similar to some burial tombs first there is a large red wooden arch entrance into the complex. In this case there was a long staircase leading into the complex.
Admission was 1000w (.90 cents) after which there was another path leading in from the outer doors. This led to the raised lookout which you pass underneath from
Behind this was another staircase leading in to the actual shrine. The doors at the top of this staircase finally opened into the shrine itself
The shrine was a small building with a full length portrait of Admiral Lee
Passing back under the elevated lookout there was an exhibition room to the side. This displayed various gifts the Chinese Emperor had given
There were various types of swords along with panorama artwork showing the battle armada in formation
There was also a pair of giant horns
On the other side of the road I noticed one other item. There were two small wells and a long cistern.
Across from the harbour on Hansan Island there is another shrine to Admiral Lee and some terraces that were used by archers during the battle against the Japanese (see earlier entry http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-e ntries/londone7/1/1367261257/tpod.html)
There was lots to do in Tongyeong over my two trips and it cant be done simply in a day trip. (see also Tongyeong Cable Car http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-e ntries/londone7/1/1367260906/tpod.html)
