Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Late last year a new Mosque opened in the Busan satellite city of Gimhae which I wanted to visit when I would next be in Busan. I tried asking in the 'Muslims in South Korea' Facegroup group that originally posted pics where it was but nobody knew exactly. During our trip to Gimhae for the Gaya Festival I was hoping I'd be able to visit this mosque, but had no idea where it was. I tried asking in the Muslims Facebook group again but got no reply, and didnt think calling the english tourist info helpline would be any use. I'd about given up and was just going to focus on going to the Gaya festival instead. Turns out when we got to the Gimhae Bus Terminal it was very easy to spot. The mosque is on a hill overlooking the bus terminal a short walk behind. When we were done with the festival I took a walk over to visit as we still had time before the bus back to Daegu. The Mosque is newly built over several floors and has traditional mosque architecture. From the bus terminal in the distance you can see the green dome and minaret pointing up with some arabic writing. Its an easy walk just down the street away from the terminal, cross the intersection and go a block up the hill. As you first enter there is a large washing area for people to clean themselves before prayers. This leads up to the main hall which is large open floor for people to pray. At the front is a prayer alcove where the Imam (preacher) will lead the prayers. The top floor was locked and still under renovation. Back down behind the washing area was an overflow prayer room. This had a nice ceramic tiled alcove, unusual that the main hall did not have one. There are no halal grocery stores that I saw as normally they are close to mosques. I'm told there is a moroccan restaurant in Gimhae but I have no idea where that is. Nearby Busan has a large Turkish influence which I have written about in an earlier blog entry http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-e ntries/londone7/1/1298105443/tpod.html see also 'Eid in Daegu' http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-e ntries/londone7/1/1320663320/tpod.html I've also included pictures of mosques in other cities across Korea.
