Adventures of a Global Wanderer
The next part of my trip to Danyang took me to the Gusu Caves. I had actually planned on coming here first from the train station to rest from the midday heat but there was already a bus to take me to Guinsa Temple so I went there first (see previous entry).
Entry to the cave is 5000w ($4.50) but is a bit awkward to find. The caves are just across the bridge from the bus terminal downtown so not really that difficult. The road will pass thru a lot of tourist shops so your instinct is to carry on walking along the street
The entrance is actually hidden inside all the tourist shops so you have to look for the big banner in Korean. This will lead you thru to the ticket area and the cave entrance.
Immediately you will notice a big temperature drop as you enter the moist and damp cave system. Make sure everything is securely in your pockets and your camera strap is on your wrist.
You will get wet and its almost raining in some places with the constant water dripping
There is a walkway with railing to lead you around. Make sure to stay in your side of the railing as the path only goes in one direction and you do not return back this way.
It can be frustrating at times as the trail is single file and does bottleneck in many places. Also be careful if you have a backpack as you have to crawl in a few places to get under large rocks.
Even though you are underground you need a head for heights. Some of the open chasms can be 5 stories deep while you climb up staircases and walk along metal gantries.
The trail will lead you up a series of staircases after which you will have to climb down a five story spiral staircase.
It can take anywhere from 20 mins to an hour to pass thru depending on the group size. I went on a busy Saturday so it was quite slow.
The exit will bring you out on the other side of the tourist market you came in from. Its a short walk back to the Danyang bridge and back to the bus terminal
