Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Last summer, having been in Korea for one year I visited the main Koreatown in Toronto which is located on Bloor St West between Bathurst and Christie Streets. Having lived in Korea for a year I was now familiar with Korean items and wanted to compare how authentic Koreatown actually was. The strip was quite long and had many stores of different natures. Most interesting was the basement E-Mart. This is a large chain in Korea like Walmart stores. I dont know if this store was an officially licenced store as you'd think they'd choose a more prominent location. However, it was well stocked with a variety of goods found in any Korean supermarket. I found the prices in restaurants to be higher, but that would be expected for the cost of living in Toronto compared to Korea. Surprisingly there was a store making walnut cakes. The street lamp posts were also decorated in traditional artwork found in Korean temples, and there were maps of a unified Korean peninsula which light up at night as the street lights come on. The kids found some of the photos quite amusing when I showed it to them on my return The neighbourhood became quite a focal point during the Fifa World cup in 2002 which Korea hosted and made it to third place. The entire street became a sea of red fans and blocked all traffic during Korean games and victories.
