Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Sunday morning Toronto hosted 'Open Streets' a new event to its social calendar. From 9am to 1pm Bloor St from Spadina to Parliament and Yonge St from Bloor to Queen St was closed to traffic and made pedestrian and bike friendly.
I had to get up extra early for this on a Sunday morning when I would normally sleep in. The east-west Bloor St stretch wasnt too busy in the early morning.
Heading south down Yonge St events became more lively with bigger crowds and street activities.
Its a shame it was only till 1pm as would be nice on a Sunday afternoon if it could have lasted longer. They plan to repeat the event on Sun Sept 6 during the Labour Day holiday weekend.
The event is modeled after similar events in other cities worldwide. Perhaps in future events they will also increase the number of routes and lengthen the closing time.
