Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Today I had another morning flight so had to be up early again to be at the train station to get to the airport. I was flying to Bergen but rather than a direct flight I chose one that made a stop in the coastal town of Alesund.
I'd seen photos of Alesund which seems to float on water but it was too out of the way to make an actual trip there. I thought with a brief layover it would be fun to see more of Norway's coast by air.
I was out the hotel by 630am as the drizzle had slowly started to move in. I could take an expensive airport bus from the train station but I was hoping to take the cheaper half hourly train. I had got the schedule from the station when I arrived.
None of the ticket counters were open this early so I had to use the machine. At first I couldn't find Vaernes Airport station until I figured out to use the 'ae' character instead of spelling it English style.
Ticket was 74K ($15) and we stopped again at 'Hell' station, so I can rightly say "I went to Hell and back"!! I arrived at the airport 7.45 after leaving Trondheim 7.10am.
Flight times would be 35mins each to Alesund and then Bergen. The flight was continuing on to Stavanger so doing the entire western coast. All snacks and drinks were for sale on the flight as I was hoping to get some juice after I had to finish my drink before security.
Immediately on take off the heavy rains and cloud hit. I wasn't able to see anything for the entire flight. On descent in Alesund I didn't see a single thing either. Same again on take off. So the plan of seeing a coastal town and Norways coast turned out to be a complete waste today.
Things cleared towards Bergen and I was able to make out the shape of the city centre which juts out so I had great aerial views. There was also more of the coast and coastal communities to see this time.
On arrival I took the airport bus for 80K ($16) which only took 20 mins to the bus terminal. From there I picked up my ticket for Friday's Fjord Cruise from the train station since they were next to each other.
I then found my hotel. The reviews were terrible on Trip Advisor but this was the cheapest place I could find at $100/nite. The lady at reception wasn't as miserable as the reviews made her out to be and she allowed me to change from the 3rd to 4th floor.
There is a popular bar on the ground floor and the reviews said to get a high floor to avoid all the loud music. The 5th floor rooms had roof skylights and were more bright but they were all booked when the lady tried to change my rooms around.
This was my home for there nites so we'll see if its really as bad as the reviews.
