Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Today I was leaving Stavanger and flying to Oslo. I was hoping to shake off the rain once and for all by moving to the interior.
Our budget hotel did not offer breakfast but we were allowed to goto the luxurious Victoria Hotel beside. They had a feast of all kinds ranging from sardines, salmon, eggs, beans, fresh loaves, fruit
As I was leaving two Chinese tourists were asking reception for the way to the bus station and were confused by the directions. I offered to lead them since I was going there as well. They were doing the reverse, had come from Oslo, and were now heading to Bergen.
At the station the counters were closed and there was no machine to buy the ticket. Luckily the driver took credit card so I paid 110K ($22).
Another landmark I wanted to see was the three swords. It was outside of town and you can only get there by bus. But I heard the airport bus passes by it and luckily we did.
I did my self check in and chose row 21 which I thought was the back but it was actually the wing obscuring the view. I was flying Norwegian which uses famous persons on each of their tail fins.
It was interesting seeing the interior landscape away from the coastline on the 45 min flight. The nearer we got to Oslo there were dense interior forests with not a single house or road.
On arrival at Oslo airport there is the expensive airport train or a cheaper local train, although they both stop at the same stations and take exactly the same time. The only difference is the airport train is nicer and runs every 10 mins while the local train is half hourly.
The local train ticket was 90K ($18) one way vs I think 120K ($22) for the airport train.
Oslo is a much more built up city than any of the Norwegian towns thus far. My hotel was a block from the central station.
They had an airport style self check in. When I put my card and pin number in the machine shut down and didn't give a key or confirmation. I had to buzz and get the attendant to come out. She took another card number as security so I didn't know if I was going to get charged twice for the room which in Norway is not cheap at $100/nite!.
