Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Stavanger is known as the gateway to the oil industry and supposedly the most expensive city with the highest per capita income. Stavanger was once the capital of the fishing and canning industry and has been able to reinvent itself.
A remnant of the old days is the old town whose houses are still showcased by the locals living there. It was fun exploring in the clear skies unlike all the rain in Bergen's old town.
Stavanger is shaped like a U-shape with the harbour in the middle and old town to one side. On the other side is the city tower.
Heading over there this is the same as the old town with the old wooden houses. However instead of being painted white they were multi coloured co-ordinating the streets.
This was also the commercial retail side of the city but they made it very hip and artsy with all the street colour co-ordination.
It was nice walking around and I was enjoying the small town feel more than Bergen which was a bigger city. Its a shame tourists overlook Stavanger as it does have a lot to offer.
Had I planned it before perhaps I should have spent a full day here and done more exploring. Now accustomed to local prices I got a kebab for 85K ($17) for dinner
