Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Early Friday evening I arrived at Tokyo Haneda airport. I'd been delayed an hour from take off in Toronto when the fuel truck broke down and needed to be towed. On this trip I arrived at Haneda which is closer to the centre then Narita which I flew to on my first trip.
First thing upon arrival was to get my JR pass and pocket wifi which I'd both ordered online. The JR pass was easy as they always have a JR office at the airport. I thought they would give me the pocket wifi since I ordered it on their website but they said they didnt know.
The printout said to goto the JAL counter which was on the other floor. Eventually I found where to go and received my pocket wifi. This was a small credit card sized device the width of a cell phone that came with its own charger.
To get from the airport to nearby Yokohama I was to take the Keikyu Airport line. They had an english speaking counter which sold me the ticket for 590Y ($7). I wasnt using my JR pass till tomorrow as I'd be wasting a day.
The Keikyu line runs thru the airport and isnt dedicated to just the airport so was busy on arrival. It was a short few stops to Yokohama. I had planned on exploring the old town but as I had arrived later in the evening it was now dark and light drizzle so I had to push those plans to tomorrow.
The capsule hotel was easy to find with the directions I printed online and with google maps. Unlike other capsules I stayed at this was a 'themed hotel'.
There were themed rooms ranging from Samurai, Japan, Manga, Ninja, and Anime. I opted for the Samurai room since I'm not big on the other themes of Japanese pop culture. Essentially they were all the same capsules just a bit of 'window dressing' in each room.
One thing I like about Japanese hotels is their bathing culture and spas. After a long flight I was looking forward to a good scrub.
Etiquette in Japanese or Korean hotels is to first leave yours shoes in a shoe locker by the main door. You then change out of your clothes into the gowns provided. Conveniently the lockers were in the room rather then on a separate floor. The lockers however were only the width of a vcr cassette so hard to make my bag fit.
In the bathing area are more mini lockers in which to disrobe and put your gown in. This is what freaks out some foreigners as the bathing areas are completely communal and open concept. There are no private shower stalls. However there are sit down stools in the showers so you can relax and spend a long time bathing.
All toiletries are provided, soap, shampoo, shaving cream, razor blades, toothbrush, but oddly no toothpaste at any of the hotels I stayed at!? Also provided is a scrubbing cloth which you lather up and use to smooth out and exfoliate your skin.
There was also a sauna, a steam room, and whirlpools of various temperatures. One was mint flavoured and one had sulphur.
Another curious themed room was the Anime room. I know cartoon porn is big but this room had sheets with cartoon women in their underwear and bra and lifesize 'cuddle pillows' with similarly dressed women. I hope these capsules are properly cleaned inside..!!!
Female readers will also be disappointed to know this was a mens only hotel. There are few capsule hotels that allow women and those that do are separated by gender so no mixing inside.
For breakfast a grilled fish with miso soup and rice was provide so a good meal. I got a comfortable nights sleep but had to rearrange several of my plans over the next few days due the late arrival today and ongoing drizzle forecast all week.
This hotel was called "Business Inn New City" and can be booked on expedia. It was a good start to the trip, close to Haneda Airport, and I would stay here again.
