Adventures of a Global Wanderer
My hotel in Hiroshima was going to be in a capsule hotel. I was excited about this as I've stayed in capsules in Tokyo and Kyoto before and enjoyed the experience. For those that dont know, in a capsule you dont get your own room but instead just a sleeping compartment in a communal area with others. The capsule hotel was a bit tricky to find despite having a map from there website. It said to take the first turn off the main road and I counted six streets down on the map. However, I checked the 6th and the 7th and no sign of the hotel. There was also supposed to be another capsule hotel nearby. This seemed a bit of a nightlife area with bars so I asked one of the bouncers outside. He told me to go one more street and I found it, but no sign of the other capsule hotel. I had made a reservation online thru their website and had corresponded with someone. However, when I got there they had no record of my reservation. I had a printout and they said ok but they werent busy that night anyway so I still could have found a pod without a reservation. They thought I hadnt stayed in a capsule before so were showing me around the locker rooms and onto the capsule floor. The locker was too thin for my backpack so I had to take some stuff out and pile it on top. Also the capsule did not have a plug outlet to charge my camera batteries. They were kind enough to let me charge my batteries at reception while I explored and had a shower. The sixth floor was the restaurant and the fifth floor the bathing area. This was a mens only hotel and there were typical asian style communal showers with bathing stools in front. It was quite well stocked with bathing supplies, free toothbrushes and razors, but no toothpaste. I used the scrubbing cloths to lather up again and get a good scrub down. There were some whirlpools and different sauna rooms. Once done I explored some more One floor had a movie room. Each chair was reclining with its own tv. There was also a smoking room and a gambling room with casino type slot machines. Another floor seemed to be "business class" with more upscale reclining chairs though there was no distinction and anyone could have used either lounge. The capsule was quite comfy similar to previous capsules. It had its own small tv with about five japanese channels. One was porn, and there was a shelf with a light dimmer switch and alarm clock. You can pull down the front blind for privacy and it wasnt too noisy except for occasional snoring. I was able to get a good nights rest for the next day which was going to be my birthday Here is their website : http://www.sauna-nj.co.jp/english.html
