A short distance from my hotel was the Jame Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, the second most famous Mosque in Brunei. This Mosque is outside of the city centre and not as touristy.
The two reasons I chose the hotel I did was because it was one of the cheapest and nicest ones I could find in Brunei and it was close to this large Mosque which would have been difficult to reach otherwise .
Being outside the city centre it was not as touristy and not as restrictive as the downtown Mosque. Photos were still not allowed but they were not as strict about checking here.
The Mosque had two domes, one for women and the larger one for men. It was just as lavish as the downtown Mosque and its unfortunate they are strict at both Mosques about allowing tourists in. As I looked like a local they didn't seem to notice me and I was able to take pics.
It had distinct architectural features despite typical Arabic styled features. It gives and idea of what some of the Mosques may be like in some of the oil rich gulf states also
