Deb's Travels...
Captains Log: Star Date 18.02.05
Rainbow Beach is lovely. We arrived and checked into the hostel directly opposite the bus stop, as we were hot and not in the mood to walk around with back packs on looking for one, it was all good and turned out to be a nice place. Hurray!
We were very organised so we didnt out stay our welcome like we had done in Airlie, and booked up a trip to Fraser Island for 2 days and one night.
We strolled down to the beach and did a spot of body boarding, as well as some lazing on the beach, which was cool, I caught a couple of 'righteous waves!' It was nice being in the sea without a stinger suit or in a little swimming net.
Fraser Island was really nice. We went on an organised tour thing, where we got fed and watered and bussed around the island. It was cool because the bus is like a normal mini bus but its a four wheel drive! Fraser Island is completley made of sand. As in, no rocks or soil at all. How cool that plant life still grows there.
The driver, Kim, would tell us when he was putting it into four wheel drive, it was cool. He was a really nice huy, very informative, he had lots of interesting stories to share with us, he also had a few not so interesting ones, and occasionly used us as a therapy session opening his heart to us, but he was nice none the less!! : )
There are dingo's roaming around the isalnd, apparently the purest form of dingo as they cant mate with other breeds becasue they are the only breed of dog on the island. I saw a couple and it was cool, there are strict rules about feeding them or teasing them or running from them, so I made sure I didnt get too close to them.
The first of our 2 days tours, we stopped off at some creeks, on eof them Eli Creek has water fresh enough to drink apparently, the fact that there were leaves floating around in it and people too ensured i just dangled my feet in as opposed to drinking any!! It was bitterly cold in there anyway so I didnt swim in there.
We also went to a shipwreck thats sits on the beach, it is all rusty and I can imagine was quite impressive in its day, it was pretty big and that is without masts and lots of rust what not.
We stopped off at the Champaigne Rock Pools, there were some nice views from there. It is terrible but I am almost getting complaicent about the amazing views becasue I have seen so many in the past few weeks its almost like I take them for granted, I had to remind myself where I was and that the view of the downs from my window at work, although lovely, wasnt really much in comparrison so to take it all in and enjoy it while I had the oppertunity!
Met some lads from Leighton Buzzard, one of whom is a police officer from Luton. How inbread. Wasnt even surprised though! Had a few drinks in the evening in the resort. There is no electricity on Fraser Island so it is all ran on diesel. The resort was really nice and you wouldnt know that there was no electricity.
The second day of the trip we went to a rainforest and did a walk, it was nice but there were lots of mozzies around that were annoying. We saw a lovely creek and some plants that only grow in Fraser Isalnd, and an eel in the water.
After the rainforrest we went to Lake Macenzie, which was stunning. The water was light around the shore and darker in the middle. Where the water got darker was basically where it went from 5ft to 30ft no gradient just a sheer drop!
Saw a big yellow and black lizard there, which was cool, he scurried across our path.
We went back to Rainbow later that day, where we tried to find Tom a doctor as he was feeling mega poorly, but alas Rainbow Beach doesnt have a doctor so we booked the next bus the following morning to get to Brisbane.
