Deb's Travels...
Captains Log: Star Date 04.02.05
Well...Innisfail...where do I begin!?? Firstly by saying that if you are ever in Queensland and think it might be fun to stay at a hostel that gets you work fruit picking on a banana farm...think again! Or don't go with the leaflets you see in Cairns!!!!
We got picked up by Steve, the hostel owner, which was good as didnt have to trek around with the ol' backus packus...however did leave us somewhat at Steves mercy! So the lack of air con in the van should maybe have set little alarm bells off for me, but no...i naievly didn't put two and two together and think this might be the beginning of a bad night!!? So after an increidly sweaty hr long journey south we arrived at the prison...oops i mean hostel...no actually prison is a more fitting word! (see Innisfail (hell) pics) Basically this place was the pitts! The beds were a joke, and I am pretty sure they were some kind of hand me down from the state pen maybe a few decades ago!??
Everyone at the place was scorning the work, saying how hard it is and the 10hr shifts started at 5.00am! Plus everyone was on different little farms to eachother so not even a chance to chat or anything! (how bout no scott!)
So anyway all in all it felt dangerously like slave labour, and the hostel was costing us the same as in Cairns and it was a joke! We checked out the next morning, i didnt actually sleep because the beds were (believe it or not) really uncomfortable, so iPoddus maximus' batteries were rinsed dry as i lay awake listening to some choons all night!!
We found Codge Lodge the next day and it was a hundred million bajillion times nicer and so we stayed there instead. Had a browse around the town, its very small and not touristy at all, nice though. Got the bus down to Mission Beach after a couple of nights, as this was enough to experience Innisfail for us!! : ) There is a quote in Toms journal that says "A potential disaster can be turned into an adventure" Done it well!
Over and out xxx
