Deb's Travels...
Captains Log. Star Date 11.12.05
Bula! From Fiji! Nadi airport to be precise... Just spent 10 glorious days in Fiji and had the last of my sun for 2005...
A recap of the past ten days... so! Arrival into Fiji is met by guitars and traditional music, singing etc which I thought was really nice! : )
Reports of Nadi (say it Nandi) are that its a bit of a s*** hole, I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but Im afraid it is...a bit of a s*** hole! There isnt much to do or see around Nadi and the only reason I think most people come here is to fly in or out or get transfers to Islands.
Fiji is made up of around 330 oslands in total so it was a bit much to fit in all of it to ten days... Feejee Experience it is then!
As soon as we booked our Feejee Experience we learnt about "fiji time" which basically means you can add on an hur to any day to day activity and your running on "fiji time" although its very laid back, its also quite frustrating at times...
The Feejee Experience (I am spelling it right by the way, its the original spelling of the coutry from Cptn Cook aparently, so thats why they chose it) was four days and took us around Vitu Levu, the main Island of Fiji.
We did some really cool stuff, like village visits and sandboarding and 11km treks, tubing in rapids, chilling on rivers on billibilli rafts... It was an awesome way to see the 'real' Fiji, which isnt all sandy beaches and blue skies. A lot of people here live in villages in poverty. We visited an orphanage too which made me a bit sad : (
It also included many Kava cermemonies. Kava is a drink made from the root of a pepper plant. It looks like mud, tastes like mud, and makes your mouth go numb. Its known as a 'relaxant' I have had a fair few bowls of it durnig my stay! It all makes sense re: Fiji time once you find out about the Kava! Its what the locals do in their spare time! Drink Kava...Bula to that!
After the Feejee Experience, we hopped on a boat and went to Mana Island, which is basically a beach and a hostel. It was really chilled out, as you might imagine, but after 4 days it did get a bit monotonous.
We did a day trip from Mana to the Island that they filmed Castaway. The day included all food and drinks and the bst part, was jumping off the side of the boat, snorkelling over to the Island, and the dudes from the boat throwing us all a beer to drink! AAAAAH! Awesome!
So that is Fiji in a nutshell. I am flying to LA in an hour or so, will update as I can!
Over and out xxx
