Deborahs journey
AFter a very long drive on the Stuart Highway watching the landscape turn into the desert we eventually arrived in Coobe Pedy. It must be the most bizarre town ive visited so far. it is obviously in the middle of nowhere and is only there for the opal mines. The landscape is dotted with dust mound where mines are. The town itself is surrounf by dirt. Its strange not to see any grass or trees or gardens. We had a tour around the town and went in an underground church. (many houses and buildings are underground due to the intense heat in summer) we then went to the opal musuen to watch a video about the history of the opal and CP. Then we had a tour around an underground house and some old mines, before buying some opal jewellary. We stayed overnight in an underground hostel. We had a drink in the underground bar at the only underground hotel in the world before going to a locals birthday party that our tour guide had been invited too!
a very strange place yet still a highlight for me!
