Today we have until 11:30 to do as we please and then we will ride the Alaskan Rail in a glass dome car to Anchorage. We sleep in and then catch the shuttle to the visitors center in the park. We watched a very well done documentary on Denali national park and looked at the animal displays. At noon we walked to the depot which is across from the visitor center. The ride to Anchorage will be 8 hours and we will eat lunch and dinner in the diner car. It is a nice train car with white linen cloths and and fresh flowers on each table. Today purple iris are in the vase. These grow wild in Alaska. Our new found friends, Jim and Carol, happen to be assigned seats just across the aisle. The bar is directly in front and we quickly get to know Travis the bartender. His Dad went to Texas Tech so there is an immediate connection. Jim and Gary have fallen in love with the Bloody Mary's and get one. Dale (from Nebraska) then treats both to another. It's time for lunch, so down we go to level one for salmon chowder and reindeer chile- excellent! Gary surprised me at 2:30 with a drink called a Moose Kiss. It has hot chocolate, kalua, Irish creme and whipped cream-yummy! We barely recover from lunch when we are called to go to the diner for dinner. We split a prime rib dinner with roasted vegetables. Another great meal. Gary buys a moose pin painted like a USA flag to remember the trip. We arrive in Anchorage at 8pm and transfer by coach to the Hilton, which is 3 blocks downtown from the depot. After settling in, we meet Jim and Carol in the lobby for beers and are joined by several other couples as we reminence about our trip. Kacey, our tour guide joins us at 9:30 after clocking off the job. She has been a great guide, funny and accomodating and keeping us all in line and on track. She gave each of us a group photo to keep. She is 28 and graduated from Florida. We all agree that the trip was flawless with great weather, scenery, friends and sites. We hug each other goodbye and find our beds at midnight.
