At 9:45am we leave the Hilton hotel and catch the Holland America bus to the airport to rent a car from Avis. We use a Tour Alaska coupon to get a free day. Anyone going to Alaska should purchase this book from the Alaska tour site. We saved 200.00 with coupons from it, using it for the Juneau salmon fishing trip, rental car, zoo, and glacier tour. The airport is only 6 miles from downtown, so it is a quick trip. We return to the Hilton and pack our bags to begin exploring the city. We hit the visitor center on 4th and learn a lot from free films every 20 minutes and nice displays at the Federal building across the street. We enjoyed a film on the 1964 earthquake. It was a 9.2 on the richter scale and quite devastating to Ancohorage, Seward and Homer, between the quake and the ensuing Tsunami waves that hit the coast and as far away as Honolulu and San Francisco. We then walked to several shops on 4th and 5th streets and used some free coupons from our Tour Alaska book. A highlight was stopping at a street vendor for a reindeer hot dog covered in grilled onions with chips and a drink. The common areas in the city all had beautiful flowers of every color. We enjoyed eating on the lawn of city hall along with lots of families enjoying the beautiful 70 degree day. We took in the zoo and then checked into a bed and breakfast and got the Africa themed room. Irene was a delightful host. When she heard we would be leaving at 6am to drive to Seward, she packed each of us a great lunch with a sandwich on home made bread, blueberry muffins, plums, and a hardboiled egg. She set out cereal and poppy seed bread for us eat as a quick breakfast. After unloading our bags at the B&B, we went back to downtown to Ship Bridge and watched the salmon running up stream. There were lots of people fishing from the banks. We also went to the statehood monumnet featuring President Eisenhower wrapped in an eagle, signing the document. We got back to the B and B by 9:30 pm, knowing that it would be an early rise the next morning.
