Deaf Guyana
Hey there! :D
Wanna to tell u my experience of watching the Guyana's premier cup matches! It was my first time to watch the football match in Guyana since i arrived here!! lol and to make it more remarkable! i managed to watch 4 different matches in 3 days at 2 different venues! :D it sure worth it as the crowds, atmosphere and chanting are much different from English football but am bit disappointed with the quality of the game which it does remind me of sunday league game! lol but no matter what the game is, the crowd are fantastic and i throughly enjoyed the atmosphere.
The first two games are the semi final of the Kanshif and Shangani Cup (u can see the pictures in photo album!). The matches is at Bourda ground and we arrived there at 7 with two deaf men, as seeing the price of the ticket is expensive, $500GYD(£1.50) which it is bit out of range for many of deaf people. so only me and another 2 can go and pay the price to watch the game. we got in and went up to 2nd tier to get good view. we got ok view due to many people already there and there are lots of pillar that are blocking the view of some part of the pitch. but still good place and we watched the first game between Fruta and Alpha. They played poorly and equalivent to sunday league game!! lots of high balls and no quality on the ground! on Alpha team, there are 2 players who i played with at the park regularly!! they are good players but not that brilliant. Alpha went on to win the match 1-0 to good goal from right back.
there are interval break and there are lots of chanting and banter between supporters toward to next game between Topp XX and Pele. There are some diehard supporters which i totally enjoy watching the slanging match between both set of supporters!! it was sooo funny to watch and they take it as a good spirit to atmosphere! the second game started at 10!! finished at midnight with Topp XX win the game 2-1 with lots of exciting close and misses. it also got more quality than the first game. Topp XX got back from 1-0 to win 2-1, they got 1 goal disallowed and hit the post once while Pele hit the bar twice and got a goal disallowed too!! it is more of entertained and better than sunday league game!! lol
On New Year Day, it is the biggest cup final in Guyana are being held at Linden which it is an hour and half drive from GT. So i went with Sean and his family to catch the bus to go to Linden. It was great and i was excited about going to watch the final. We left GT at 1pm and arrived there 2.30pm. We went to Seans sister house which it is on outskirt of Linden and it is based in village which there are lots of wooden and metal building. so i am entering the house and feel real guyanese building which i dont really set my foot in since i got here. So i am experiencing the real guyana life and i was excited about sleeping there for a night.
I meet her and her family, 5 children! so addition of me, sean, his family and seans brothers to make up of 15 people squeezing in house of 3 rooms!! 2 bedrooms and lounge/kitchen. toilet is based on outside. It is real guyanese house!!
In the afternoon, Sean and I went to Linden to buy the tickets for the final that evening, and we went to visit the deaf church in Linden, it is closed but it is good to see the building! then we got on boat taxi!! very different! we also visited the market and met seans another sister there! sean got a big family as he grew up in Linden! so it was good to meet his family!! Then we got back to house to have a dinner and get changed before going to the intense packed staduim for the final.
We arrived there at 7.30pm and the staduim is full already but the ground around the pitch is still bit empty. there are some food stands, drink stands and games stand which we went to explore the place. the game kicked off for the 3rd/4th playoff between Pele and CFC. The match is sunday league standard and the score was 2-2 at full time, Pele Keeper f***ed up soft shot which it trickle into the goal just before the full time of normal time!! it carried the game to extra time which noone find a goal, then it is penalty shot out, pele held on to win 5-4.
Then it is FINAL, the staduim was absolutely packed by 10pm as it is when the final kicked off at 10.30pm. The staduim can hold up to 20,000 but i can see it holding more than it!! I really enjoyed the game and the atmosphere! I did noticed that i am the only white person in the staduim!! But they still made me feel like guyanese as been talking to some of the people and chanting on Alpha Utd as 2 of the players i play with! But at the end of exciting game, they lost 1-0! The time was at 12.30am when the game finished!! I really enjoed the whole night.
THen we went back to town square to cartch the bus but we waited for an hour and half before we decided to get taxi!! as loads of people keep walking past us and it will never stop!! lol got home at 3am! and slept on floor bed with nothing but clothes!! woke up at 9am due children playing. stayed for breakfast before catching the bus back to GT at 12.
I want to say that i totally enjoyed the experience with sean family and i have been part of guyana lifestyle for one day and night. great experience.
Thats all folk and sorry for long story but want to say all of it! :D
Cheers and miss ya all
