Day 12
Clay Bank Top to Gainsborough
18 miles
Depart 0920
Arrive 1720
Dry feet for 3 days in a row was seeming too good to be true but looking out the window promised another good day, despite the rain through the night.
Today's walk would take in a large section if the Lyke wake walk. A 40 mile challenge to be completed in 24 hours. Myself and Chris attempted this walk a little while ago only to be seduced by the comfort of the inn at the half way point. Hopefully that wouldn't happen today.
It was a Speedy first section Along a disused railway line And as far away as about 2 mikes we could see the inn looming on the distance marking the half way point.
Once we saw it though it then dropped out of sight as we descended slightly but we soon came to a side track off to the left which would take us upto the inn. A turning me and Chris had missed on the Lyke wake walk and added and extra mile and half to the inn. In fairness though it was pitch black when we missed it.
Arriving at the inn we found the Australian group enjoying tea and cake and we joins them for half an hour and a catch up before they headed off. Once we had polished off our lunch provisions we started thinking about leaving when Andy and Tabitha turned up and so a 45 min stop turned into an hour and a half.
After our indulgent stop we all set off together up the road. First point of interest was fat betty. A stone monument at the side of the road where walkers we supposed to take and offering and leave on in return.
The last 100 meters to fat Betty had us all moving a little faster a even prompted some sprinting in order to get the good stuff on offer.
There was some good and some bad with Eloise being the most unimpressed at a carrot. But we all made our exchanges and set off again.
All that was left was a Short hall upto high point then long steady descent to Glaisdale which felt like it lasted forever as the sore feet started to kick in at the last mile.
We were staying on a dairy farm just in the town and arrived to find tea and coffee and custard creams waiting for us.
The pub was a good 20 mins walk away and so instead we opted for Duvets (as it was bloody freezing), doctor who, and left over lunch.
An early bed ready for the final day tomorrow.
