Glaisdale to robin hoods bay
20 miles
Depart 0835
Arrive 1715
The best days weather had been saved for today. There wasn't a cloud in the sky. It was going to be a long day and so we has breakfast early at 0720 and were on the path by 0830. A short navigational mishap though the dairy vow fields at the back if the farm had us climbing over a fence rather that than the expected stile but we were soon back in track.
The day started off out of Glaisdale and pass beggars bridge - built by a successful man who, in his youth as a poor and unsuitable suitor, had to swim the river for secret meetings with the squires daughter whom he later married.
We met tabby and Andy again an hour in whom we would walk with the rest of the way. For much if the early part of the day we made our way under the cover of forest for a change and welcome relief from the heat, culminating in arriving at a waterfall with a cafe that was actually open for a change. We made full use of it with tea and cake and a refilling of the water bottles.
The middle part of the day we were back on some small sections if open moor in Wainwrights last attempt to wet our feet or have us fall in bog. An activity only Steve partook of gaining himself a very wet left foot for the rest of the day.
The coast, seen for most of the afternoon was getting tantalisingly closer. The final few miles would be on the coastal path and as we made our way though a caravan park we finally emerged on hill looking down to the coastal path and fantastic views over the sea. About half way down the hill though we spied the Australians and we broke into a run intending to breeze past them with a nonchalant air. Sadly they turned around almost as soon as we set off and all we had left was Andy shouting you can run but you can't hide.
We met them at the bottom if the hill to mock them for being caught. We had decided to have a quick snack at this pint and so sat to appreciate the view and nibble as the Aussies pressed on.
We lingered as long as possible for what we be a lovely last stretch in comparison to the usually tired and painful last leg if the day. The choice of taking our time and appreciating this final stunning part or getting to the end as quickly as possible was decided by tabby as she set off at a demon pace that had us all sweating in the sun.
As we rounded the final bend though robin hoods bay finally came into sight. just a short diversion inland and then down the steep descent to the sea.
Steve and tabby broke into a sprint for he finish which steve was only slightly smug about winning whereas the rest off took it as on the final steps. It was then off with the boots and into the sea.
With very cold feet and after lots of hugging and congratulations all round we headed up to the bar which was fortunately 30 seconds away and into join the australians who were already on there second round.
The obligatory pint of Wainwrights beer plus a few more and we all had a great evening and as various groups peeled away to their accommodation, myself, sarah, Steve, and Eloise were left to reminisce over the past 2 weeks before promising to do it again in a few years time, something I would gladly do with two such lovely people, and then heading off with sadness that the trip was done.
