Our Year of Adventure
David had the morning dives booked with Coconut Tree Divers and decided to be a bit earlier today - he always seems to be last on the boat. Despite being what he considered to be extremely early, there were three more people who were obviously keener than David...or perhaps they were jet-lagged North Americans that were awake before the 5am sunrise.
The dive sites are chosen pretty much at the last minute, literally, but there had been a request to dive at Hole in the Wall and that wish was being granted today. It was supposed to be a great site but David knew little about it.
As the boat cruised North to the dive site, a briefing of the site was given. It was all about rock formations, swim throughs and caverns. Most people will get excited about narrow passages and caves etc. when diving but the greatest experience on this dive, according to David, is the 'actual' Hole in the Wall. Divers are dropped at the edge of the reef wall and they make their way to the "Hole" which is actually a sand chute. This particular sand chute is deep in the reef and very steep. Descending rapidly with rock walls either side, you eventually 'pop' out the reef face at 30m below the surface with the blue abyss stretched out before you. The remainder of the dive was back up on the reef top, making our way through some very narrow passages and testing every divers buoyancy skills.
The second dive was at Half Moon Bay Wall, almost straight offshore from the beach we swim at most days. This dive would be a regular wall dive with more emphasis on marine life. As we descended, we almost landed on top of a turtle - what a great start to a dive. Shortly after moving over to the reef wall, a spotted eagle ray slowly and gracefully swam past us. A few more turtles and some great colourful coral made for an amazing dive - probably the best dive in Honduras so far.
We had to do some laundry in the afternoon and conveniently the laundry is on the beach and has an adjoining ice-cream shop, Deliciosa. With the laundry being taken care off, we enjoyed a swim and an ice cream (Espresso Fudge is probably the best, followed closely by Coconut). The lady at the ice-cream store is a native of Costa Rica so we had a chat with her and gleaned a few tips, from a locals perspective, on where to go when we get there in a month or so...
