For someone who wasn't much looking forward to the prospect of spending another day in Bangkok, let alone a week, having felt that it had lost its rather novel charm after the five or so days a few months ago, the buzz I felt as I stepped out of the taxi yesterday at the end of Kho San Road was incredible. This is one of the many things that travelling is all about, for me, and I'm excited to be able to rediscover Bangkok....hopefully this time around I might keep a slightly closer eye on my possessions, and actually be able to furnish you (and this blog) with some pictures of Thailand's capital. Strolling down Kho San last night at 11pm, watching all the other people moving about and the stalls hawking their wares, the plethora of neon lights dangling over our heads, I have to say, it felt good to be back :) The new airport is pretty impressive - a place of gargantuan proportions, with giant murals adorning the brick walls, and little forests behind the glass ones - it won my approval, as I'm sure the Thai officials would have been only too relieved to hear. Gold star.
I'm staying back at My House on Rambuttri, one of the places I stayed 'pon my last visit here, and despite my rekindled love for the place, I'm going to be heading off tomorrow morning for Ko Samet - one of the islands just to the south east of Bangkok, only a few hours drive and ferry ride away. I'm looking forward to stringing up my hammock above a white sandy beach and gazing, for the last few days, out over crystal clear waters. Unfortunately, given that it's the rainy season and there's so much pollution from boats etc. around, this probably won't happen. However, one can dream. On ne sait jamais and all that jazz. Allerlei Leute. Yep. (Just as a sidenote...and I'm sure you'll be interested to note this down...Ko Samet apparently is the proud owner of the title of the island (phew that's a bit longwinded) which receives the lowest annual rainfall. So maybe I'll be lucky afterall. Sweeeeet). The one danger of going there is the fact that there's diving to be done...and I seem to bea sucker for it. You'll be pleased to hear (I hope), that the companies here are a little more reputable than those in Vietnam, so I'm not expecting any more Open Water-style adrenaline rushes. Fingers crossed eh?
Right, off for a stroll to be among my farang brothers now, love to all.
