Train tripping Intrepids - 21st May 2012
Still squeezing all the value that we can out of the cheap concession travel, so we decided to ride as far south as these fares would carry us. Destination Kiama 120km south of Sydney. Kiama is pretty little seaside town with its main claim to fame being its Blowhole. It meant being a bit more organized and onto the train into Sydney a bit earlier as we had to change to the Country Service at Central station and as they only run every hour timing was important.
Once out of the suburbs of Sydney we travelled through mountainous country with quite a few tunnels to get through the mountains. The day was perfect with blue skies and very little wind. The first job was to post back home some of the birthday presents for family that Trish had been collecting in all those gift shop visits. She put a lot of thought into what she gets for people unlike last minute shopper me. As usual we had accumulated a few more rock specimens to post back. They always break the bank as they are heavy and a bit pricey to post. Just can't help ourselves when it comes to those rocks.
After checking out the blowhole, which was only blowing very occasionally due to the relatively smooth ocean, it was time for lunch. It appears to be an Eastern States thing but yummy anyway, as we had a pie with a scoop of mash potato on top then another scoop of mashed peas on top of that if that is not enough they press a hollow in the top and fill with a scoop of gravy.
Then our final train ride back to Sydney and on to our camp in Lane Cove National Park. Sydney is wonderful but time to move on and get settled in before some predicted rain hits.
