Kangaroo Valley to Katoomba NSW: Thursday 10 May 2012.
We woke up to find Kangaroo Valley shrouded in mist and it did look beautiful. Got away at 9am and rode through Fairyland to leave the Valley….the twisty mountain roads were awesome to see, with lots of emerald green and big ferns to grace our views. First stop was at Fitzroy Falls just out of town, but they wanted money to stay so we hopped on our bikes and left. Then through lovely mountain roads all morning to avoid doing the boring busy main highways….through Exeter, Bundanoon, Tallong and then onto a road stop for petrol and a snack just out of Goulburn.
From Goulburn we rode along high country roads through Taralga (nice old stone buildings) through to Oberon for a quick pie lunch in the main street. The roads to get here were a little scary, with funny cambers on corners with "don't look down" mountain sides, lots of bumpy roads and some challenging hairpin bends where you had to "floor it in first gear" to get up and around. I was able to warn Dave with my helmet speaker on one doozy bend as I was leading...it's a bit harder for him as he's pulling the trailer behind his bike. This was the Abercrombie mountainous area….the scenery was worth it! I was sad to see a lot of the natural forest had been logged to put in pine tree plantations though.
After a bit of very busy main highway riding we finally arrived in pretty little Katoomba, and quickly set up our tent. Lots of young European backpackers here and we chatted to a few as we cooked our tea in the campers kitchen. We were missing some simple home cooking and so we treated ourselves to baked beans and fried egg on toast..Yum!
Then into our cosy tent with the great little electric fan heater…best thing we have in our travelling kit I reckon! Makes life easier for we Intrepids.
