So we left the lovely Copen Ruinas town nice and early in the morning and got on a very crowded minivan to our next stop in Gracias a Dios.
Honduras is starting to prove a tricky country to move around. Our first experience was this packed minivan with no leg room, mid way we stopped at a town and all of a sudden loads of dodgy looking men starting running towards our minivan and all tried to jump on, luckily the drivers helper kicked them off and one guy fell straight into the side of another bus, crazy country!
Then onto the crazy chicken bus for the next 2 hours of more crampness. During the chicken bus ride we had a random person jump on the bus to sell the ultimate vitamin injections. To our surprise all the locals were interested with many buying. We were not so sure about buying injections from a stranger but the locals love it !
So after two uncomfortable hours we arrived at Gracias and checked into a lovely hotel. We treated ourselves to our own nice modern cabin surrounded by lovely forest scenery, with an on-site restaurant and bar, and cable tv (the choice had nothing to do with Dave wanting to watch the gp, or maybe it did?)
So Gracias, well its a very small quiet town, beautiful buildings but slightly rundown (in a nice way) The town is apparently called Gracias a Dois because during the Spanish conquest then stumbled into this bit of land and shouted ´Thank to God, We have found flat land!´
So we wandered around, took in the local culture, did a nice museum (with an annoying drunk local following us around demanding money for more drink!) We went to the town fort which overlooks the town, a very nice small scale white star shaped building. Even though it is declared a national heritage site they let all the local kids hang out there, and are proud to claim that many of the locals fell in love at this fort.....very nice indeed.
So thank god we turned up in Gracias, it is very nice....oh and it was actually flat.
