So how many people can you fit in a Honduras bus? The answer is.....As many as the driver can fit in as possible! The bus on our current trip had capacity for 18 people. We reckon there was at least 35 people crammed in. And the driver stopped for anyone who was waiting on the side of the road and literally squashed them into the smallest gap. This was the last bus of the day so demand was high (note that this last bus of the day was at 9am!)
Dave and Emily were slightly clever and bagged the two seats next to the driver in the front. Good idea you may think, but it meant we had a full view of the crazy driving. a 2.5 hours journey through twisty mountain roads, the driver in a hurry and Emily hanging on to Dave all the way.
We got our 2nd bus at "La Esperanza" ("Hope"), so we thought transport might improve. We got on a nice big bus... but then waited an hour before it moved. Suddenly, Emily felt a weird feeling on her hair and turned to see a gnarled clawlike hand with filthy fingernails on her head. Traumatised, she tried to move her head to the left, only to find a second claw to this side. The next 2 hours of the journey were pretty much Emily alternately trying through vigorous head movements to make clear that her head was not a resting place for clawlike hands and resignation to leaning forward in an evasion tactic. The bus was getting fuller all the time and as a finale, the last half an hour was spent with a Honduran guy with a massive belly standing in the gap between Emily´s knees and the seat in front, talking over her head to the owner of the clawed hands behind whilst simultaneously gesturing his own hand in Dave´s face.
At least the travelling isn´t boring... but we (another bus and a tuc-tuc ride later) were extremely pleased to arrive a the brilliant D&D brewery (and hostel), set in the Honduran jungle by a massive lake, which would be our more tranquil home for the next few days.
