After a 6 hour bus trip to the Guatemalan border, we passed through a very nice and easy customs office and before we knew it we were in a new country and nice new mountain town to explore.
We are in the town of Copan Ruinas, Western Hondras. This place is a World Heritage site, and is rather lovely.
Nice small quiet town with great mountain scenery, nice people and lots of culture. The town is most famous for the Maya ruins just down the road (which we did not visit due to Maya overload)
There is a great town square, lots of nice bars and great food a-plently. We checking into ´The 6th best hostel in the world´ according to Lonely Planet. Well their Planet must be very lonely as it wasn´t that great. It was more like a quiet pleasent guesthouse but with one important aspect missing - any staff !!
We dont know if they were on holiday or just non-existent as we never saw them, and had to always go to another establishment next door to get them to let us in the hostel. In the evenings a young boy appeared and sat outside to let us in, but he had to sleep on the sofa in the guests lounge, which meant we all had to vacate the communal area go to bed quite early so he could have his bed......very odd.
On our second day we treked up to and around a Hecienda, this took us past two areas of note. 1) Stone Frogs, and 2) Hidden local village.
1) Stone Frogs = These apparently are fertility frogs, they are ancient carved stone in the shape of frogs which woman are suppose to visit in order to get pregnant. When we arrive Emily immediately jumped on the frog and spent far too long sitting on it, talking to it and stroking the frog for Daves liking!
2) We came across a small hidden village, whereby all of a sudden loads of small children appeared and all ran towards us. Before long we were swamped with them, all trying to sell us ´corn dolls´ They were all very sweet (and persistant) and the photo here is of some of them with Dave.
So first impressions of Honduras are good, we have one more day in Copan Ruinas before we move on...however tomorrow Emily has persuaded Dave to try his hand at horse riding....
