Day 16 - Left a very comfy B&B at Winchester about 9.30 and headed east on some busy country highways. With the start of the working week, I guess that is to be expected. We turned off the main arterial at Petersfield and headed south to Havant on the coast. The run along the coast was even more congested, but the scenery was more varied. We skirted around Chichester & went on to Littlehampton. East of here we stopped for our first close up of the beaches at Shoreham. Here the beach was not sandy, but made up of golf ball size pebbles. The waves were more like the ones we have at Redcliffe. A single line of privately owned huts lined the foreshore. In some of the more popular beaches there are hundreds in a row, some all brightly painted and from what we discovered, quite expensive. They are only about 4x3 metres, not designed for sleeping, only to be used as large lockers for the owners when they come to the beach. We headed further east through Brighton and Seaford leaving the coast at Hastings and returning about 20 miles later at New Romney. From here through Hythe & Folkestone, the towns were not so busy. We arrived in Dover around 5pm and found our way (with the help of the GPS) to Salisbury House, our B&B for the night. Located only 10 minutes walk from the city centre, but we decided that while we still had plenty of sunshine (yes, we had sun all day) we would visit the famous white cliffs of Dover. After a 10 minute drive together with a five minute walk we were standing on a narrow track admiring the cliffs. From here we had a panoramic view over the Dover harbour directly below us. What a busy port that is. The huge vehicular ferries, laden mainly with semi trailers run non-stop to France. It's only just over a 2 hour crossing. In the hour we were there we saw 1 ferry arrive and 3 depart from the 1 of 9 terminals in the protected circular harbour. They motor into the harbour, turn around and reverse into the pier - all under their own power. There were hundreds of semis waiting in holding areas to board the ferries. We were a bit hungry by this time so it was off to downtown Dover to the "8 Bells" pub for a great dinner (came recommended by our host at the B&B). Tomorrow we have to look forward to the drive into London (will definitely need the GPS for that one). Have to return the car to the Hertz depot in Marble Arch. That's going to be a challenge. Benjamin and his mate Tye arrived in London yesterday, so we are looking forward to catching up with them tomorrow or Wednesday.
