So it was off to Seattle, via numerous stops. First of all was the driving over the Golden Gate. This was preceded by me hearing a clicking noise coming from the car we had just picked up, and after an inspection we found a huge screw in the tyre! Lucky! For the inconvenience we were given a better, bigger car for free. A Pontiac GT…nice, but to my horror it was white. It may well have been the whitest car on the face of the planet. Oh well, by the time we reached the golden gate it was pissing it down, but that wasn’t going to spoil the moment, I drove over the golden gate bridge, tick that one off. Anyhow the Journey was a long one up the 101 highway which takes you all the way up the coastline. And these roads even matched the Cornish lanes in England, windy and small. Luckily I remembered to drive on the right the whole time. The Coast, although muggy and overcast was gorgeous, deserted beaches with little coastal retreats. The couple I was traveling with are called Vicky and Nate, an English couple I met in Fiji, luckily their music tastes were good, so tunes and the name game followed us all the way.
We came across our first obstacle, when the lake had flooded and the road ahead was about a foot to two feet deep with water. This was the only route, and a Mustang made it though, so we chanced it! Phewwwww made it just!
On day 2 we went through an area known as the valley of the giants, in reference to the huge redwood trees that surrounded the roads. This was seriously awesome, they had trees big enough to drive through, and ones that had been hollowed out from lightening and were still alive. These trees are huge, and they surround the far reaches of northern California. It’s very different up here, compared to the heat and desert of LA and San Diego. The Valley was beautiful, around 30 miles of giant trees and natural wonder, lakes, rivers etc… Well worth a drive, maybe in summer would be nicer – It’s really cold up here.
