Dan and Lu's Travels
The flight from Manchester was 13 hours to Singapore, then we had around 3 hours before our onward flight so we went for a beer in 'Harry's Bar' in the airport, where strangley enough they were playing a medley of Mancunian music (Oasis, Simply Red and Take That)!! The flight to Ho Chi Minh City was only 1 hour 1/2.
The heat hit us when we left the airport (about 29 degrees). There must have been about 300 people stood outside behind barriers, taxis, hotels etc. We haggled for a taxi but really had no idea whether we were being ripped off... and I think Dan just wanted to haggle....
What a journey! We spent most of the 25 minutes in silence just looking out the window. This place is amazing. Every street has power cables hanging so low in some places that you could swing from them, and the buildings are so higgledy piggledy (many painted bright colours). As we got into the centre of Saigon the streets got wider but the amount of people on scooters just increased. Seriously, there must have been thousands of people on bikes. I was convinced Athens held the title for the most mental, no rules traffic, but no. Constant horn beeping! Our hotel, the Red Sun, is small but clean and very friendly, we're paying US$7/night.
Went for a few drinks that night, drinking Saigon beer (between 15,000 and 20,000 Vietnamese Dong - VND - 28,000 is 1GBP). There are 4 and 5 year old children selling cigarettes, bracelets, roses, gum etc on the streets until the early hours.
We ended up in a bar called Eden, where we met a couple of Swedish guys and a couple of Irish guys. Ran out of cash so the manager (Chin) took Dan to an ATM on his moto!! Got in at 4am, after buying a rice/noodle/egg/pork concoction at a street stall. Welove it here!
