Day 10 '& 11 - Etosha National Park Etosha is the major game park in Namibia and everyone was looking forward to our time there..... It had 4 of the Big 5 living there and it was huge. The real game drive started and true to form we spotted a Lion actually hunting,we waited a bit to see some action and suddenly it jumped out of hiding and sprinted to catch a zebra. Unfortunately for the Lion the zebra was too alert so ran away faster than the lion could follow and it had to leave the place hungry During the drive we also saw Cheetah and Rhino but not particularly close ...... We also saw lots of other wildlife but were becoming increasing blasé about anything not Big Five ....... No Leapard yet - this elusive creature had become our major quest but had so far eluded us. Evening Waterhole ....... After dinner we made our way to the local waterhole, taking our own drink with us. When we arrived there were no animals present so we just cracked open the beer and waited. After 10 minutes we heard very loud grunting noises and it sounded like whatever was coming did not believe in trails, merely pointed A to B at walked straight through everything in between - it turned out to be 2 black Rhino's. After a while they got boring but just when I decided to leave the Elephants turned up ....... I counted 29 including babies - amazing. They left after about twenty minutes and a group of Impala came into the clearing but ran off quickly, we soon understood why .... A Leopard nonchalantly approached the water, looked around, took a drink and coolly moved on....... We left soon afterward, with Big cats around nothing was risking the waterhole anymore....... Well except for the Rhinos, who had remained throughout and were not going to be moved from their local for anything. Lion Ambush..... Approaching the end of a full morning's Game Drive and nothing extra-ordinary had happened, when we noticed a Pride of 7 lions lying under a tree, so we stopped to take photographs. As we watched, one of the lions moved away and settled under another tree - it was then we noticed a herd of Zebra approaching but still maybe a 100 metres away, slowly grazing their way forward. Over the next half hour the rest of the lions discretely moved into strategic attack positions and lay down to wait. The Zebra's were closing but very slowly - The lions were very patient ...... More patient than us, as it turned out because the majority vote in the group was to go back for lunch ....... So we did and missed the climax but I suspect that the Zebra herd was reduced by at least one and the patient Lions had a bigger lunch than us, albeit slightly later. After lunch we went back to check out the lions but stopped at a big waterhole on the plain ..... I had never seen anything like it, at least 300 animals sharing the waterhole. There were Giraffes, Zebras, wildebeest, gemsbok, Impalas, Kudu - one or two scuffles with the Zebras but generally just " chilling out" When we got back to the Lions ambush site ...... Nothing - they had lunched, cleared away, washed up and moved on. Great day.
