Danny's Summer '06 Study Abroad
I went to Wales this weekend w/ 3 Figi's. Thursday Firdaus, Paul, and I left for Wales and arrived at our hostel in Fishguard that night. Steve, the manager was very friendly, he knew our names as we entered and didn't even have us pay until the next day. He was very helpful for suggesting things to do and made the place seem more like a home than hostel. Damian didn't come w/ us b/c he didn't want to miss a class so he ended up showing up at 2 in the morning. That evening the 3 of us went walking around Fishguard to see the main harbor. It's a very small town w/ not much happening and the harbor had 2 piers.
The next day the 4 of us went hiking to Dinas head, a mountain that we could see from the harbor. It only appeared to be about 3 miles away but we ended up hiking probably 10 miles b/c the coastal paths follow the edge of the cliffs in an out of the penninsulas, up and down the valleys. It was a beautiful hike, we saw gorgeous cliffs, caves, beaches, and different types of landscapes. The caves looked like something from Pirates of the Caribbean. Not far from the harbor of lower Fishguard was an old fort w/ a few cannons. Fishguard was the site of the last invasion of the British in 1797. We finally arrived at the summit of Dinas head about 3.5 hours later and relaxed up there for a while, taking in the scenery. We took a bus back b/c we weren't about to hike another 10 miles back. That night we went out to the very few bars in Fishguard w/ 2 Australian girls that were staying at our hostel. They know how to holiday, taking 3-5 months off to travel around.
The next day (sat.) we booked a coasteering trip. Coasteering consists of jumping off cliffs, climbing around the rocks and swimming around. Luckily we had wetsuits, b/c if not we probably would have died from hypothermia. Our guide said the day was warm to one of the locals, a blistering 65 degrees outside and boiling 60 degree water, talk about warm. Needless to say, any hangover that one might have been feeling was instantly gone, not saying that I had a hangover. The trip was so much fun even though it was cold. From the town of St. David where we took the trip I headed back to Haverfordwest to catch a train back to Oxford. I ended up walking around Haverdfordwest for 2 hours while I waited for a train and the same in Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Not too much to see in these cities. This Wales trip was another awesome trip, completely different from anything I've done yet.
