Danny's Summer '06 Study Abroad
Today Lewcock took us on a tour of some churches. Some are different from anything we've seen so far b/c they have a façade that stands out from the rest of the building. Also, most of the churches are just in the middle of a small street corner, or in a square (piazza), and some are even attached to other buildings like apartments. The church of S. Ignazio di Loyola was very unique b/c it had a painted dome, since a dome wasn't able to be constructed for some reason. It really looked 3D, like it extended above the flat ceiling surface. The church of S. Ivo alla Sapienzo was also fascinating b/c it had a spiral top and many stars, which symbolized the heavens. After seeing the churches we went to the Pantheon (which was huge, and the hole at the top was a lot larger than I thought it would be). Later on I went to the S. Pietro church which has the famous Moses statue and Peter's chains. Then I went to the Piazza della Repubblica and the basilica in it, which was Michelangelo's last architectural work.
