After a good night and a nice breakfast at the motel, we hit the road to head for the Santa Monica Pier and the end of Route 66!
It was only 20 or so kms away but once again traffic jams slowed us to a standstill and it was after 11am before we got there and drove the last leg of the route!
Message to Perth drivers: If you think the piddling hold ups on the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeways are bad enough to whinge about non stop, then come to the USA, hire a car and try to drive in LA! Every freeway, all day is chocked solid, so much so that our GPS had a meltdown trying to avoid the jams and finished up trying to send us via Malibu 80kms north, to avoid the delays!
Anyway, rant over, back to the story! We drove right onto the Pier and found a parking spot in the tiny park out on the deck, and then signed our names in the Route 66 book and had our photos taken with our Certificates! We took some photos and wandered out to the end of the Pier, the temperature was about 15 degrees cooler than in the city, and then took a drive along Pacific Way to Venice Beach before heading back towards our hotel (we had decided to spend 2 nights there, rather than pay upwards of $200 in LA), stopping at a Walmart where I think we were the only Caucasians in the store, and then getting back to our motel to clean the car out and pack our gear ready for the flight home!
Tomorrow we will have a sleep in and then try and find something to fill the day before we fly out at 9.45pm - always hard to do and as we have to return the car by 6pm, and with the above mentioned horrendous traffic to contend with, it's not going to be easy! Also the forecast high of 37 degrees means it's going to be something indoors! But I'm sure we'll sort something!
