We woke up ridiculously early, the jet lag was still taking its toll, and Brian jumped out of bed mumbling something about a dead monkey while pointing at his mouth. We decided we may as well get an early move on since we were obviously not going to sleep anymore and started heading up the coast.
Brian was still a little tired and cranky, so I got to experience my first time driving a car on the left side of the road. I got comfortable pretty quickly and was grateful that we'd ended up with an automatic car. While I could remind myself to stay left, and turn wide on rights, I just couldn't get the swing of the turn signal's location, and cleaned our windshield every time I needed to turn or change lanes! Changing from Park to Drive usually involved grabbing something invisible on the door before switching to my left hand.
We spent the morning in Moeraki, looking at boulders on the beach, a light house, a crap ton of very lazy fur seals, and one lonely yellow eyed penguin. Hooray!! I had finally gotten a look at the world's rarest penguin! Strike that from the list!
We then went on to Oamaru- the steam punk capital of the world. We were a little disappointed that it wasn't quite as "steam-punky" as we'd envisioned, but on the whole it was a really lovely place. We saw a couple of penny farthings, and a few well-costumed folks.
We had our favourite meal yet at the Star and Garter, the oldest restaurant in the town, and stayed in our favourite airbnb - if you're planning to go, we'll hook you up!!
We wandered and explored, but as everything closed at 5pm, we had time for a nap before supping and penguin viewing. Hundreds of little blue penguins, the smallest penguins in the world, call Oamaru their home, and I was determined to see them all! Mission accomplished!! The little birds faithfully come running back to their nests in the conservation area at night fall, and we were their waiting to greet them. We'd even managed to stay awake til 10pm to do this. But that was as much as we could handle, so off to bed we went despite our best intentions to go for drinks at the pub.
