We have a couple of big days travelling ahead of us before we can slow up a little. With a couple of shorter legs to travel before reaching Darwin on Friday.
We are heading to a free camp beside the river at Camooweal today. Luv these 110km zones, I can scoot along to the next major town or where ever Pat and I have arranged to meet (usually for lunch or a fuel stop) and either sit in a shady spot under a tree or go window shopping till he arrives. Strict rule - No buying anything because as Pat has said to me many many times this is a 19ft caravan not the TARDIS :)
As we passed through Mt Isa I was so tempted to stop and wash the car at the local car wash because I didn't have a chance to clean it before leaving. Never mind I resisted the temptation as I will have plenty of time in Darwin to do it.
There is a section of road on a range near Mt Isa where the speed limit for road-trains is 80km/h. Pat saw/heard a short conversation on the UHF radio between a highway patrol cop and a truckie in a roadtrain who didn't know the cop was behind him. It went like this...
Cop - "Copy in the roadtrain heading down the range"
Truckie - "Yeah got ya." (Probably thought it was Pat calling him)
Cop - "I'm doing 103 down the range and you're pulling away from me. Get your foot off the accelerator!"
Truckie - "Or what?" (Still not realising it's a cop behind him)
Cop - "Or I'll give you a real bad day! You can do the right thing or I can take a big wad of cash out of your back pocket. IT'S YOUR CHOICE BUDDY!" (Pulled out from behind the truck and hit the lights)
Truckie - "Ahh Okay"
We arrived in Camooweal and had a look at the free camp near the river, we had planned to stay there for the night but I said I preferred a place with a toilet - just me being a wuss as the garage toilets were only 1500m or so away and I could drive the short distance. Our van is not equipped with a bathroom. Next one will be though.
There was still about an hour or so of daylight left so we decided to move onto the free camp at Avon just across the Northern Territory border where there was a free camp with toilets. It is only about 60km away. The speed limit in NT is 130km/h on nice open roads.
Here we sat watching the sun go down over the horizon with a drink in our hands. We have travelled 737km to get to this point.
Whoot Whoot the Cronin's have left the state of QLD.
