The first leg of the journey to Darwin was a short one, as we didn't leave until after lunch. The first night was spent at the free camp at Duaringa. We have stayed there before on other trips.
We left really early next morning as we wanted to get to Winton. I went ahead as I am able to do the speed limit in the Mazda . As Pat is towing the van he needs to tow at a lower speed. We certainty don't want to do any damage to the vehicle or the van. The Prado also has the kayaks on the roof racks dragging through the wind. Higher speed = using more fuel that is not necessary.
We arrived in Winton where we were staying for two nights. We went out to Lark Quarry to see the preserved dinosaur footprints. They are the only known fossilised dinosaur stampede that you can see in the world. Pat and I have wanted to see this for a long time but for different reasons we have not been able to call in before. This is an amazing place to see out in the middle of the outback.
I went for a walk in the Winton township, lots of Opal stores to look at and a great enactment display of the dinosaur stampede and other displays of the wool shearing & the history of the building the displays were being exhibited in.
We're heading for Camooweal tomorrow.
