CALTAGIRONE, Sicily, 20th August 2011.
As usual breakfast, granita and briosche, before Saro and Pina take me on a day excursion to Caltagirone. Caltagirone is known for its wonderful ceramics and the potters were world famous in the Middle Ages.
Here we visit the Clorful Majolica ties which decorate 142 steps of the Maria Santissima de Monte staircase. Finally we made it to the top to recieve wonderful views. I would hat to be the person living along the staircase, imagine taking your groceries and belongings up and down.
We also visit the church San Francesco d'Assisi, rebuilt like most buildings after the 1693 eathquake which devestated 80% 0f Sicily. An interesting time viewing the Museum which was a Bourbon Prison.
On returning back to Acireale, we had lunch with Zia Graziella. After lunch I packed my bags to spend the week with Fiorella and her family.
Joining Fiorella for dinner was a number of her friends who I had met in Stazzo. Pizza was on the menu. I do enjoy the pizza's here in Sicily as the bases are thin. Desert as usual, Gelato.
A new week begins with a new adventure.
